Huatulco
is centered around the town of La Crucecita Huatulco,
Mexico. Huatulco's tourism industry is centered around
its nine bays with thirty-six beaches, many of which are
accessible only by boat. Visitors can explore the
beaches and bays in relative privacy, or dive to see
tropical fish and coral. Each
bay has its own unique character some having several beaches which form little
pockets nestled into the towering cliffs, others are wide open to the surf, and
still others have coral reefs with crystalline water and numerous species of
tropical fish and other abundant varieties of sea life. Here it is also possible
to see giant sea turtles and pods of dolphins. The foothills of the Sierra Madre
del Sur Mountains form a framework for each of the bays and are covered with
abundant tropical foliage. It is truly an unspoiled tropical paradise where 70%
of the area has been designated as an ecological zone.
The four main parts of Huatulco are Tangolunda; Santa Cruz, a small town
with the marina and Santa Cruz beach; La Crucecita, another small town just
inland from the beach area that provides support services to the resort; and Chahué, an area between Santa Cruz and Tangolunda. These areas are within a mile
or two of each other, so hotels and restaurants for all of them are listed here
on the Huatulco website. The
area is known for its beautiful isolated bays separated by rocky hills set
against the backdrop of the Sierra Madre del Sur. Traveling north of the area,
the terrain rises quickly becoming a lush tropical jungle where crops such as
coffee, bananas, cashew nuts are grown.
In addition to the beaches, one can explore and shop in the small communities of
Huatulco, such as Santa Cruz, La Crucecita, or old Santa María Huatulco (the
municipal seat). When doing so, one can travel between the communities by bus or
taxi. The entire area has a "small town" feel about it and is rarely crowded
with tourists with the exception of the Christmas and Semana Santa holiday
periods. There are direct flights to the Huatulco International
Airport from Calgary, Alberta (approximately five and one-half
hours). Huatulco International Airport is only a short 20
minute drive from Hacienda Real in Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz Marina
The church contains a plaque (at the back of the church on
the left side) telling the story of the Holy Cross of Huatulco. The anniversary
of the Holy Cross is celebrated in late February.
